Abstract

[Purpose/significance] This paper investigates the cognition of Chinese and foreign researchers on social networking, and makes a comparative study on the purpose, motivation and needs of academic workers using social networks. [Method/process] Based on questionnaires, users’ awareness of social networks, use motivation, and access information, and so on from 707 Chinese respondents are collected. The results are compared with the investigation from Nature. [Result/conclusion] The result shows that Chinese scholars are not very aware of the use of the SNS, and tend to use Google Scholar. In foreign main SNS platforms, Chinese scholars have a certain degree of awareness of ResearchGate. In addition, Chinese scholars mainly use SNS to acquire academic information and less for more important functions, such as research cooperation and communication.
