The Content Analysis and Main Features of Annual Reports of Nine Public Libraries in America

[Purpose/significance] This paper focuses on the planning and compiling of public libraries' annual reports by researching contents and types of annual reports of public libraries in America. This study may promote the specification and standardization of annual reports of Chinese public library to perfect the information disclosure system of the public library, promote and popularize services of the public library, and maintain the sustainable development of librarianship. [Method/process] This paper investigates and surveys nine American public libraries web sites by empirical research methods to explore the goal, factors, length, release time, release channels and forms of these annual reports. [Result/conclusion] By studying these reports, the annual reports of public libraries can be divided into the theme-based report, the card-based report, the poster-based report, the modular report, and the single report. The annual reports present some typical characteristics, such as having some common contents, but also a focus; provide a number of combinations; focus on financial information and data disclosure; are prepared with a variety of forms, and tend to have a variety of themes and multiple forms, and focus on diagrams and data.
