Abstract

[Purpose/significance] In this article, a detailed literature review on image-representation-based personal information management tools were presented, including hierarchy-based PIM tools, 3D-based PIM tools and context/semantic-based PIM tools. [Method/process] This article mainly used literature review, retrieved PIM-related literature in and abroad, also read other literature from information management, cognitive psychology, ergonomics, information behaviour and artificial intellegence, thus initial formed the theoretical foundations of this article. [Result/conclusion] The reasons why these image-representation-based PIM tools were not being widely used were analyzed as follows: They were not compatible with users' habits, not considering users' needs, not making use of human memory fully and lack of evaluation.
