Abstract

This study explored the implementation of a new circulation self-service model using patrons' personal devices such as smart phones with a mobile app capable of checking out items to the patron's library account. By investigating staff of more than 50 American university libraries, the results showed that although the circulation of the self-service concept has been widely recognized, implementing mobile service is still on the way. About a third (35%) of the library deployed a buffet reception, about half (51%) of the library staff knew about self-service applications, but more than two-thirds (70%) of the libraries in the near future did not yet considered mobile self-checkout service. Delivering American libraries' practice, authors hope this article can be helpful to understand the factors and issues around the mobile self-checkout services in order to make better decision to respond to the growing digital reading habits and the demand for mobile services.
