Abstract

To explore the characteristics of web users' search behaviors in the exploratory search process, this paper sets one question-answer search task and two different complex exploratory search tasks, divides the participants into two groups according to their retrieval capacity, and records their browser logs in the experiment. The results of log analysis indicate that search tasks and search ability can differently affect users' search behaviors in the exploratory search process. Compared to the question-answer search, exploratory search demands more information; participants are highly affected by knowledge background; the more difficult the task, the more and more dispersed the results of exploration; the retrieval capacity less affects the search behaviors in the exploratory search process.
