The Method of Industrial Key Technology Identification Based on Co-citation Cluster and Patent Portfolio Analysis: A Case Study on Crop Breeding Technologies

[Purpose/significance] The key technology plays an important role in the technological innovation activities. Therefore, the identification of these technologies is of great significance to the development of industry and enterprise. Based on the patent co-citation clustering and patent portfolio analysis, a set of key technology identification analysis framework was established, which can provide reference for industry and enterprise in planning and decision making. [Method/process] The steps are as follows: firstly, several patent clusters with similar contents are obtained through the patent co-citation clustering method. Subsequently, these clusters were analyzed and named by experts. Finally, these clusters were evaluated by patent portfolio analysis from two dimensions, of which are paten activity and patent quality, and the patent cluster with high number of patent applications and citation frequency are designated as the key technology. [Result/conclusion] By compared with the previous methods, the method in this study can not only effectively identify the key technologies, but also reveal the actual needs of technologies at industry level. In addition, it can also be helpful for the enterprises to make different technology development strategies according to their own needs.
