Abstract

In order to enrich the understanding of social tagging systems as diverse information environments, this study conducted an online survey to collect real users' background and behavior data relevant to their information seeking activities. Douban, a representative and influential Chinese-language system, was chosen to be the research setting. After analyzing the data collected with the "Friend-of-a-Friend" recruitment technique, we found that searching, browsing by proxy, encountering, and monitoring are the major information seeking modes adopted by social tagging system users. If users are distinguished in terms of their dominating modes, then browsers become the most prevalent type of information seekers, even slightly exceeding searchers in quantity. Different information seekers do not demonstrate significantly different characteristics by and large, however with some exceptions.
