By reviewing the research on information needs (IN), this paper concludes that it has turned to a cognition-oriented phase as a whole and formed a research mode which basic framework are stimuli (contexts)-cognitive models (information needs)-reaction (information behaviors). The research has gained a considerable development on the cognitive essential, the context, and the theory of IN, and exposed difficulties and challenges such as cognitive models. Based on the analysis of demands and research status of information retrieval (IR) technologies, this paper believes that the IN future research will continue to research cognitive-oriented theory and promote the applied study. It also focuses on the contextualized IN research, cognitive models, and the cognitive-model-driven IR systems in the future.
